Peru scored two goals to end Australia’s dim hopes of reaching the knock-out stages of the World Cup in their final game of Group C.
A stunning volley by Watford’s Andre Carrillo opened the scoring in the first half, with the forward connecting with a cross first time to send the ball flying into the bottom corner.
Peru outnumbered Aussie fans in the crowd and made an enormous noise throughout but quality was lacking on both sides. Australia pushed for an equaliser, knowing that they needed France to beat Denmark in order to progress, but couldn’t quite create anything that resembled a clear chance.
Pablo Guerrero, who was only able to play at this World Cup thanks to personal pleas from Mile Jedinak and Australia over a controversial drug ban, killed off any fading optimism from Australia in the second half, finishing a chance in the 50th minute to make it two.
